Omg. Hotel Discovery was SO bad! We should have just left, but we had already paid online. That first night, I regretted not learning German. We could have made friends with our neighbours! Our other neighbours spoke Mandarin. I suppose I could say I regret not learning that too. And there were douchebaggy kids playing football in the hall. I'm too old for this.
Last night, Friday night, was even better. Our next door neighbour was having a party and watching porn in their room. I went down to complain (it was almost 2 AM!) and it turns out someone else had already complained about them. Also, it wasn't our next door neighbour -- it was two doors down. And apparently there was only one person recorded to be in that room, so everyone else was kicked out. Nice. Regardless, The Boy and I checked out and into a Best Western near the train station. This is the luxurious honeymoon part of our trip!
Yesterday, The Boy and I deemed the day Shopping Day. We met up with JD and her beautiful darling little daughter EV for coffee and snacks and walked around the city a little. We went to the Bourke Street Lululemon that has like five Canadians working there. The manager is even from Ottawa! JD told us that Melbourne is Australia's Shopping Capital so after she went back home to put EV down for a nap, we went exploring. We found some really chic shops in some small alleys and some bargain basement (actual basements) warehouses where I was able to pick up a number of things for less than $50. Then, we met up with EQ's friend PH for drinks at Hairy Little Sister. It was a good day -- I love The Boy with all my heart, I do, but it's nice to talk to other people sometimes.
Today, we took a tram ride out to Albert Park to visit JD and family. We ate gorgeous sandwiches and macaroons in St. Vincent Park and played in the playground (Well, EV did; we watched). Her husband DD graciously drove us back into town. We didn't participate in any hook turns, but we've seen a few in town. They're so weird. Instead of turning right from the rightmost lane, in Melbourne at certain intersections, you actually pull to the left, wait for traffic to clear, and then turn right. TO THE LEFT. THEN TO THE RIGHT. weird.
We hung out and walked around and accessed the incredibly fast and free internet at the State Library. We went for thai (where The Boy choked on my basil seed and green jelly drink) and then went to Fed Square to try and meet up with PH again to go out again. Internet issues kept us apart, but The Boy and I watched Nadal vs. Rafa at Federation Square, and then walked over to South Bank to the Crown Casino. We had a few drinks at one of the clubs, Tangerine, but it was lousy with kids. Lots of girls in short dresses and tiaras and buttons that said "18!!". SIGH. And I was maybe looking around for a toilet and maybe there was a girl in a horrible (i'm not kidding, i'd say this even if the following didn't happen) (i mean, maybe) white dress with a pleather shoulder ruffle and studs talking really loudly on her mobile phone and she DID say "stop looking at me, asian!" Horrible thoughts. Horrible horrible unyogic thoughts.
So. apparently the drinking age here is 18.
