Yesterday was the best day ever. Strong statement to make but let me break it down for you:
1. Patio: we hung out on a patio for hours using free internet. It wasn't that humid out and it showered a little, but then became sunny and moderately warm. The internet was frustratingly slow, but we had nowhere to be.... just maxin and relaxin...
2. Shopping: The Boy and I went for a walk through the CBD, ran into one of our dive instructors who told us to go find some bike shops just east of a shopping centre. We went for the short jaunt to look at bike jerseys, and then walked back to the shopping centre to look for new fake wedding rings. My $1 ones were all faded and gross. My new ones cost $2 each :) We spent hours looking through the stores here. We didn't spend much but it was just nice to walk around!
3. Lagoon: We went back down to the water and swam in the lagoon. It's a little funny but you have to drive or bus to the beaches a few k away, and there weren't that many people there, so we just jumped into the pool. It was great, and super convenient for us.
4. Massage: In the night markets, you can get a 40 minute Chinese (or Korean, as the case may be) massage for $15. I can recognize the importance of having a fantastic registered massage therapist (or two!) but it still felt good and was helpful for my poor hips.
5. Sushi: The Boy and I had found a sushi place where the sushi goes around on a little conveyor belt, but it was closed on Mondays. Oops. So we walked back down towards our hotel and found another sushi place with a conveyor belt. Have you met me? I adore sushi in all fashions. The Volcano roll was my favourite.
6. Gelato: Gelati is a dime a dozen in Cairns. Of course -- it is the hottest possible location ever so gelati is what everyone craves. The night before I'd had mango and blood orange. Yesterday I had lemon custard. I regret not getting the green apple. Or the lychee. Or the pistachio. or the dark chocolate. but I have an ice cream maker now and I need to remember that.
7. Massage Part Two: Despite all the magic, I hadn't been feeling 100% (all the in and out of the air conditioning) so we settled in for some quiet time in our room. The Boy gave me a hand and foot (and calves!) massage while we watched some fun episodes of Cougar Town on the laptop.
I know. You hate me.
Today was another travel day. We came to Alice Springs via Qantas, but our flight was delayed so Qantas TOLD US TO GET SOME REFRESHMENTS AT THE AIRPORT ON THEM, UP TO A VALUE OF $25 EACH BOARDING PASS. wh...at? WHAT!? So, we got some pizza and salads and were not too upset with Qantas at all. And by the time we even got our food, they were last calling for our flight. Delay schmelay. Luckily we were not the last people on the plane. On our flight, they still gave us sandwiches (currently in the fridge for eating tomorrow) and cookies and australian fruit cups. We landed in Alice Springs and were immediately picked up by the Toddy's people, even without our requesting it!
We visited Reptile World and petted Frank, a Spencer goanna (monitor lizard) and saw Terry, the MASSIVE crocodile that TOTALLY glared me and The Boy down. I'm not kidding! Seriously. It was sitting in his tank and we were taking pictures of him through the glass, and he slowly got up, took a breath, and then came back down, spotted us, swam CLOSER to us, and then GLARED AT US THROUGH THE GLASS!!!!!! I actually backed away. That thing is twice my size! Don't judge me. You'd be backing away too. Dammit, you weren't there. We took some pictures and then ran away.
Anyway. Reptile World is great. We took tons of pictures and learned about snakes and bites and even saw a teeny tiny lizard and alerted the employees. Turns out it was just a wild lizard that got in through the door. What are the chances? it was probably trying to jailbreak his friends.
We walked through the CBD and then came back to Toddy's for dinner -- camel steak! My dad had told us to try fried camel hump meat and this was the first time we'd even seen it on the menu. It was ok. too red meaty for me, but the peppercorn gravy was fantastic. Tomorrow we're going to visit Ayers Rock and The Olgas!
