Yesterday, it rained in Vancouver. Not that crazy an idea, considering it's supposed to be one of the rainiest cities in Canada, but we'd actually heard that it cleared up for our epic weekend in Van, so we were disappointed that it rained. I woke up to rain but thought I heard it die down. After a quick brekkie of cinnamon toast, I thought I heard the rain die down and maybe The Boy and I could make it to the train station in relative dryness. Not so. He opened the front door and called to me, "Are you kidding me? it's not even close to not raining." we hugged each other all the way under my tiny drugstore umbrella, but I thought it was kind of cute!
We took the train to Granville to shop on Robson and at the Pacific Centre. Of course, we spent time at H&M, looked for sunglasses for The Boy and some new (waterproof) shoes for me. We visited the Lululemon on Robson and I found the Spin Me shirt, a new tank that hasn't made it to Ottawa yet. I had to have it. And i found this great Vancouver designer who makes everything reversible! i LOVE double duty clothes! Even The Boy, who had a solid hour to sit and read in that shop, admitted that everything in that store was totally me. And i didn't even spend THAT much money on two dresses and a shirt (ie. four dresses and two shirts). no, really.
After shopping and picking up everything that we needed, didn't need, and didn't know we needed but totally needed, we stopped at the Fairmont for a pre-dinner drink. When we travelled around in Australia and New Zealand, The Boy and I would get hungry around 5 pm and eat dinner right away, forgetting completely that we could have had predinner drinks and a snack before heading into the main attraction. We are vowing to bring back the predinner drink into our lives. We're trying to stave off the grandma sydrome of eating at 4 pm.
We met up with MB and NH for dinner at Shabusen, an all-you-can-eat sushi and korean bbq that PC recommended to me and I was only too excited to try. It was awesome! But i had a hot sauce tummy ache afterwards. That Orange Habanero sauce from Sunday really messed me up. The food was good and it was great to hang with girlfriends (and have The Boy grill our meat for us!) The food itself was ok (mostly good, some of it a bit weird) but I had a really great night overall.
We had to rush to the airport afterwards to pick up our rental car and I missed my motorcycle ride with DS. It's ok. I Know I will get it in before I turn 30! :)
Today was magical. We woke up early, loaded the car, hugged MB (we'd said goodbye to DS last night) and thanked her for letting us stay at her house! So very helpful, and it was so great to hang out with friends that I almost never get to see.
We set out for Penticton, but the long, scenic way, as DS recommended. It. was. incredible. It reminded us so much of New Zealand, but 100% Canadian. Mountains! Grass! Trees! Even the dead grass in the deserty areas! And.. the wineries! as far as the eye can see, and then some. We stopped at Rustic Roots where I picked up a peach/necatarine wine but The Boy hated everything that was there, and then we stopped at Seven Stones where The Boy picked up a Meritage, but I hated everything there. After the Similkameen area, we needed to take a break. MB had recommended lunch at the Burrowing Owl where they have this deliciously spicy Caesar. It was a really cute winery, but we didn't actually like any of THEIR wines. Our server told us where to find that spicy wine so we went right to Silver Sage. SO good. It's one of their ice wines but infused with a hot pepper and they use that in place of vodka and tabasco in the magical Caesar. But alone, it tastes sweet and spicy all at the same time! Their other sweet wines were perfect too. I maybe spent more on wine today than I did on clothes yesterday. The truth is, I NEVER drink at home. I will spend 59/60 days alcohol-free.. but every single day on this trip! Man.
Our little motel room in Penticton is cozy and filled with oversized furniture (read: small and has too much furniture for the space), but it's home for the next week. We've filled it with fresh local produce from Keremeos and groceries and race paraphernalia. YAY!
