Number 19: Shoot a Gun

I don’t love guns. They mostly terrify me, and I’m not interested in most things gun-related. But when DM suggested I put it on my list of 30 things to do before I turn 30, I said, “why not?” Half an hour later, he texted me saying that he’d found a shooting range open house and it would be the cheapest option for us. Eeps. He was serious.

We were late for handguns (since I was teaching yoga) (yes, recognizing the irony in this) but we went to the rifle open house. We listened to a short presentation about the gun club and took an extremely condensed version of the safety course. Then, we were paired up with gun club members to supervise our shooting and walk us through the safety bits and, in my case, remind me how to load the bullets into my little (extremely heavy) rifle.

We lay half-rolled over (semi-prone, on one hip) and loaded these tiny little bullets and then looked through two scopes (hard to do) and then shot 10 bullets at 5 targets in an M formation. The targets were black circles with big white circles around them and I got on three black circles and within the white circle on the last two. It was hard to aim – I just couldn’t get steady for 9/10 shots, but I totally did it. It was so fun!

And I so want to go back for handguns!
