Ever since TL lived with me for that month in 2007, I have wanted to go sailing. See, TL is the truest form of a free spirit I have ever known. Undeniably gorgeous, strong, easygoing, sweet, and adventurous like nobody's business. One day she came home and we talked about our days. I told her about my boring day at work and probably playing soccerbaseball at lunch. She told me about going to class and about going sailing.
Me: What? Sailing?
TL: Yeah, it was great!
Me: Wait. What? Why did you go sailing?
TL: Some guy on Craigslist* needed a crew and I answered it and said 'sure, I'll go.'
We should add "brave" to that list. But little TL went on the sail and had a blast and now lives on a boat for a living. Amazing. And I have wanted to go sailing since.
So I did! Last week, SG put me in contact with a couple she knows, D and L. I met them at the Nepean sailing club and we went out. I "pulled lines" (yanked on ropes) and "tacked" (turned the boat) and even "steered" (steered)!! And it was exhausting but extremely fun. We were even in a tiny little regatta! We didn't win… but we weren't last! And isn't that what matters?
It was beautiful and awesome and wonderful and I loved it. I'd totally do it again :)
*this was way before the Craigslist killer, back when answering ads was still safe. Still, I lectured her about going off with a crazy and how she should at least text me to let me know beforehand so SOMEONE knew where she was going.
