Number 21: Fly a Kite

I tell everyone and their dogs about my list. It makes me accountable. Sure, I've had five years to manage this list and I'm only doing it now. People are most surprised about this one.

Everyone: "You've never flown a kite!?!?!?"
Me: "No, not successfully."

The last time I tried to fly a kite, I was maybe 12. We built kites in tech class out of balsa wood and painted kraft paper with little flowers and and happy faces and peace signs. And the next day, when the paint had dried (and dried the paper into a stiff mess along with it), we took our kites out to the football field and tried to set them aflight. It did not work. And I have a very vague memory of flying a kite when I was tiny and having the kite nosedive onto the ground a few times. That memory was more of a flashback when I saw it happen this time.

This time, I was ready. I bought several kites from Giant Tiger *just in case* something went wrong. JJ assembled my kite for me, PH made me hot chocolate, and The Boy took me out to a park to set it up in the air. And on a very very cold October afternoon, when I was 29 years old, I successfully flew my first kite! Sure, I had a few of those flashback-inducing nosedives, but after a while, I got the hang of it and was able to save it AND steer it. Amazing. $5 Giant Tiger penguins kite, man! It was awesome. And when my smile was planted firmly on my face, The Boy said to me, "can I play too?" I love him. Of course he can play. And we vowed to get good kites and play on a hill next summer. All summer.

We'll see :)
